Beloved Nokia 3310 is back with 4G LTE and Android

It’s one of the most popular mobiles of all time, remembered for its near-indestructible build, long-lasting battery and legendary Snake (well, Snake 2 if we’re being accurate) game, and the team licensing the Nokia phone name has jumped at the chance to reignite the love for a phone which was once the leader in the mobile market.

Even so, the device is in the open and as such, we know a lot about it. The 4G-friendly 3310 will look the same as last year’s model, but the software inside is reportedly improved over a Java-based platform to an Android-based operating system made by Chinese retail giant Alibaba – though that could change if it makes it to the US, UK or AU regions.

What's big 4G differences?

  • Hopping up from 2G and 3G to 4G with the new version of the Nokia 3310 comes with its share of perks, including the ability to act as a Wi-Fi hot spot, and high-definition VoLTE calling support.
  • Since the phone doesn’t appear to have changed, the same can presumably be said about its battery life.
  • Based projections, 4G looks to take a heavy toll on the 3310, bringing the lifespan down to about five hours of talk time compared to the 2G version’s 15-hour target.
Global availability of the Nokia 3310 4G is unconfirmed, as is its price, but we expect at least a $20-30 premium for the feature compared to the 3G version, which sits at $59 in the US, £59.99 in the UK and AU$89.95 in Australia.

Republic day offer in Reliance Jio - Effect on Jan 26

In a bid to offer more value to customers competiton, Reliance Jio Republic Day offer has been announced, giving customers up to 50% more data and a discount of Rs 50 on most per day data plans.

This announcement comes after Reliance Jio had recently announced that customers can either opt for 500MB more data or a discount of Rs 50 in tariffs.

Reliance Jio Republic Day offer details
1GB per day plans revised to 1.5GB per day

  • As part of the Republic Day offer, Reliance Jio has increased daily data allowances by up to 50%.
  • The telco has upgraded the existing 1GB data per day plans to 1.5GB data per day at no increase in prices.
  • Instead, the operator has announced a discount of Rs 50 in tariffs.
  • As a result, the most popular Rs 459 plan will now cost Rs 399 only, and offer 1.5GB data per day with a validity of 84 days.
  • In effect, users can get up to 126GB high speed 4G data in plan, along with other benefits like free voice, SMS and access to all the Jio apps.
  • To sum up, the new 1.5GB data per day plans are available in the following denominations – Rs 149, Rs 349, Rs 399 and Rs 449.

1.5GB per day plans revised to 2GB per day

  • Next up are the existing 1.5GB data per day plans, which will offer 2GB data per day come January 26.
  • As a result, users can get up to 182GB of high speed 4G data under this segment. The available denominations in the new 2GB data per day segment are – Rs 198, Rs 398, Rs 448 and Rs 498.
An interesting point to note here is the difference between the popular 84 days plan in the 1.5GB and 2GB segments – the two plans, i.e., Rs 399 and Rs 448, come with a price difference of just Rs 49, but the Rs 448 plan offers 42GB extra data, which means it offers a lot more value for money when compared to the flagship Rs 399 plan.

512GB micro SD Launched in UK

UK-based company Integral Memory has launched a new 512GB microSD, which is the first to be able to hold more than half a terabyte of data.

The new 512GB card exceeds the previous record held by SanDisk’s 400GB card, packing in over a quarter more storage.

Although the 400GB card from Sandisk is faster, with an 80MB/s transfer speed Integral’s latest card still meets the standards for apps and 4K video recording.
It’ll work with any device that supports microSDXC, which is most Android phones and tablets, as well as some PCs, like the Microsoft Surface Pro.

Mega memory:

James Danton, Marketing Manager at Integral Memory said: “The need to provide extended memory for smartphones, tablets and a growing range of other mobile devices such as action cams and drones has been answered. As a company, we are very proud to be the first to achieve the 512GB capacity milestone in microSDXC, worldwide.”

Integral Memory’s 512GB behemoth will be available in February and although there’s been no official word on price yet Sandisk’s 400GB card retails for around £219.99, so we expect it to have a higher price tag.
Of course the microSD card is likely to be too big and too expensive for most average users, unless you have hefty storage needs or shoot tonnes of 4K video.

But it’ll definitely give you bragging rights that you’ll have the storage capacity of a small laptop in a card that’s the same size as a penny - plus you’d never have to worry about running out of storage ever again.

Yahoo Finance launches Social saving App called TANDA

Yahoo Finance today launched a new app called Tanda that allows small groups of either five or nine people to save money together for short-term goals. The app uses the concept of a “money pool” – that is, everyone participating in one Tanda’s collaborative savings circles will pay a fixed amount to the group’s savings pot every month. And every month, one member gets to take home the full pot.

But Tanda is not a gambling app. That is, users are not contributing in the hopes of “winning” the pot of money – everyone in the savings circle gets a chance to take home the full pot at some point.

In other words, while it’s true that you could just set aside a set a fixed amount of money on your own, Tanda’s makes saving a more collaborative and social construct.

The other difference between saving in Tanda and saving on your own is how the app handles payouts. The first two people to receive their money pay a fee, but the last payout position receives a 2 percent cash bonus. This rewards users who are willing to wait to receive their turn at the pot, though some will want higher positions in order to get the large payout sooner.

A higher position is obviously more desirable if you have a more immediate need for the funds – like buying books for school or replacing a dead laptop, for example. Of course, you still have to pay into Tanda to take money out, so it’s not a direct replacement for a credit card. But, with some planning, it could used as an alternative to charging larger purchases.

As a user participates in Tanda by making contributions, their “Tanda score” increases. With higher scores, the user gains access to higher value savings circles and earlier payout positions. These savings circles can reach up to $2,000.

And if someone drops out, Tanda will step in to cover their positions.

Tanda is also working with its partner Dwolla to vet users before they can begin saving, the company says.

Yahoo explains that the app is designed to help individuals achieve their financial goals without racking up more debt.

The company hopes this will allow Tanda to attract a millennial audience, which is already drawn to social apps in the finance space, like Venmo. In addition, this younger demographic is facing a variety of financial struggles, like higher costs of living, difficulties in finding work, and they often struggle to save on their own.

The app is being released under the Yahoo Finance brand.

Yahoo, like (disclosure!) TechCrunch parent company AOL, combined to form Oath, which is now owned by Verizon. But Yahoo continues to maintain its own app store presence through apps like Yahoo Finance, Yahoo Weather, Yahoo Newsroom, Yahoo Sports, Yahoo Fantasy Football, Yahoo Mail, and many others.

Top Reasons to Avoid Noodles

Instant Noodles is easy to prepare and yummy dish for all kids .But with little to offer nutritionally and the ability to do a lot of damage to our body’s systems over time, instant noodles have become the bane of nutritionists everywhere.

Risk of having Noodles:

  • Noodles use a lot of artificial flavors and colorings, as well as a lot of preservatives, and all of these ingredients can wreak havoc on your metabolic system, making it very difficult to lose weight.
  • There are reports out that eating a lot of instant noodles, especially early in your pregnancy, can inhibit the fetus’ ability to develop and lead to miscarriage. While this theory is still waiting for research to back it up, most doctors don’t recommend eating instant noodles regularly during pregnancy, simply for the fact that they are so lacking in nutrients.
  • Instant noodles are extremely low in nutritional content, offering virtually nothing in the way of vitamins, minerals or fiber.
  • Instant noodles are also loaded with unhealthy carbohydrates that can lead to weight gain, diabetes and heart disease.
  • These convenience foods are high in sodium, which can cause kidney damage and an increased chance of strokes.
  • Instant noodle seasonings are full of MSG (monosodium glutamate) which is known to cause ill effects in many people, from a flushed, burning sensation in the head and chest to headaches and bodily pain.
  • Propylene glycol, one of the same ingredients used in antifreeze, is also approved for use in instant noodles, as an agent to help keep the noodles from drying out.
  • When instant noodles are eaten regularly by children under the age of five, they can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb nutrients in the gastrointestinal tract. This denial of nutrients creates a risk of delayed physical or mental progress in the child.

Tsunami warning for Caribbean sea

The Caribbean is a region that consists of the Caribbean Sea, its islands and the surrounding coasts. The region is southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and the North American mainland, east of Central America, and north of South America.

A MASSIVE 7.6 magnitude earthquake has struck near Honduras in the Caribbean Sea, sparking a tsunami warning.

The US Geological Survey said the quake, initially reported as a magnitude 7.8, was centered 125 miles northeast of Barra Patuca in Honduras and 191 miles southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands.

It was very shallow, only 6.2 miles, which would have amplified its effect.

The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a bulletin shortly after the quake struck.
