Rangamalai Organic Farms-Native Brinjal Seed Extraction Method

Post From Rangamalai Organic Farms -Mr.Pradeep.

In the late 2016, we collected close to 40 native brinjal varieties from the native seed savers across India. We grew all these seeds in a small area in our farm with the intention to multiply the seeds and distribute to urban gardeners and interested farming community. We were successful in this journey. The most important task in the entire process is to harvest the ripe fruits, extract the seeds and classify them carefully. We documented the entire seed extraction process and would like to share with you all.

1.Brinjal Seed Extraction Method:
Ripened brinjal fruits are collected and segregated in different baskets based on the classifications.

2.Then the fruits are sliced one variety at a time and immersed in a bucket of water.

3.The matured seeds are removed from the cut pieces and the left over flesh are given as feed to our backyard poultry. Sometime get into the compost.

4.The seeds are then filtered from the water and allowed to dry in a plate or cotton cloth for couple of days until dry. The dried seeds are also mixed with desi cow dung ash.

5. Later the dried seeds are collected and packed in containers with below information on the container labels.
Type of seed
Name of the variety and code if any
Date of package
What type of seed treatment was done.

6. Germination test is done on the stored seed sample to define the Germination Rate. For this 100 seeds are taken per variety and allowed it to grow in a seed tray. Based on the number of seed growth the Germination Rate is calculated.

NOTE: All our seeds are grown using natural farming methods using organic fertilizers and herbal pest repellents. We use cow dung ash and other natural herbs like neem/nochi leaves to store and preserve the seeds.
